Scientific Selection of Wheat Herbicides

Step one:

Wheat field weeds are mainly divided into two categories: grassy weeds and broadleaf weeds.

Grassy weeds have slender leaves, such as American privet, Japanese American privet, wild oat, and ryegrass;

broadleaf weeds have large leaves, such as cleavers, shepherd’s purse, and capernaum.

For wheat fields dominated by broadleaf weeds, herbicides such as Tribenuron (-methyl), Thifensulfuron, Florasulam, and Fluroxypyr can be used.

If resistant dicotyledonous weeds are present in the field, 20% Fluroxypyr can be considered.

For fields with severe grassy weed infestation, herbicides such as Mesosulfuron (-methyl), Pyroxsulam, Flucarbazone (-sodium), and Pinoxaden can be used.

If grasses and broadleaf weeds occur together in the field, it is necessary to rationally mix the two types of herbicides mentioned above, or directly choose a compound product that can control both types of weeds simultaneously.

For example, studies have shown that 3% Mesosulfuron (-methyl) is highly effective against grasses such as barnyard grass, while 5% Pinoxaden is excellent against American bluegrass and Japanese American bluegrass; both are relatively safe choices.

Step Two:

There are two key periods for chemical weed control in wheat fields: before winter (mid-November to late December) and in spring (from wheat greening to jointing).

Before winter is the golden period for chemical weed control. At this time, most weeds have emerged, are young, and have poor resistance to herbicides.

One treatment can basically control weed infestations for the entire season, and the dosage is small, the cost is low, and it is also safer for wheat.

Step Three:

Most herbicides require application when the average daily temperature is above 6℃, preferably sprayed between 10 am and 3 pm on sunny days.

Before applying pesticides, be sure to check the weather forecast and ensure that there will be no sharp drop in temperature or cold wave within 5 days after application, otherwise pesticide damage may occur.

When the soil is dry, the amount of water should be increased appropriately to ensure the efficacy of the pesticide.
